To My Husband

Happy Anniversary!

Fourteen years today. Doesn't seem that long ago, does it?

Yet again, when I think of us moving in that cramped little apartment with all of our new wedding gifts and our old, mis-matched, ugly furniture (our decorating theme was "free"), it seems like another lifetime ago.

And when I think of how we were without our kids, it seems like we were different people living a whole other life.

Then again, maybe it does feel like fourteen years. Except for the fact that you still surprise me sometimes, and I still like you. ("I like her. I really like her.")

And I love you, too. Happy Anniversary!

(Hey, I just had this thought: in another fourteen years, Sally will be in college and Samuel will be in high school. Scary, huh?)

No, what's scary is that I can remember seeing you two for the first time during orientation week at BU in August of 1988.

What's scary is that I remember when you got married -- wasn't it like the day after graduation? I remember thinking, "Is she crazy?! Trying to plan a wedding and graduate from college in the same week?!"

Our 14th anniversary is six months from now. And you're right, it does seem at times like those were different people, those young people hanging out in the Biola Cafe. Seven years of marriage before children. That tiny apartment with free furniture.

God willing, we'll both be married to the same men in another 14 years, and still like each other.

Oh, K, I was crazier than that . . . we got married the day after graduation, AND I was in the middle of student teaching. I believe I took Monday and maybe Tuesday off, then had to finish the school year. Also, our only car died a few weeks after we got married, so we borrowed Tera's truck because she was working with Tony Campolo's group in Philly for the summer. It was way crazy.

Congratulations! I think that these days celebrating marriages (and their duration) should be big deal! Get a sitter and go have fun.

Whenever someone has a big anniversary I think of saying something like "congratulations on tolerating each other"
That's what it comes down to. You have proven that your desire to be together is stronger than your need to have things your own way.

I remember our first apartment and our furniture was all hand me downs and particle board type stuff. Ah, memories.

If anyone is wondering why my darling is fondly referring to me as a horse, you need to get on over to chickenone's blog and check out her post on the injured horse, and read all the comments. Thanks, honey. You are a real stud!
