Mommy Advice

This one is a quickie: if you are planning on nursing your baby, go buy a nursing bra at a maternity store in a mall. Have a sales person help you, and get the kind without wires. The kind I liked looked like a sports bra. Get at least three of them, because once your baby is born, you'll be wearing them 24/7. Also, if you are buying maternity tops, get two or three that button, because you'll be needing those when your little darling is born. You'll be wearing maternity clothes for a few weeks after delivery (sad but true) and button shirts are the way to go.

Is this any kind of announcement? You're sure talking about baby stuff a lot lately. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

This is so true!! I was glad I had a few with leaking in the beginning. I didn't really use button up tops too much. Just stayed with stuff that was easy to lift and no dresses.

Visiting from UBP-nice to meet you!

Child of God - my bff from high school is pregnant with her first and asked me for some new mom advice. I am NOT pregnant and we are not planning on having more children. :)

Ooh, Sheila, sorry, but I have to disagree with you about the no-wire bra. And buying in a maternity store. Now, granted, the maternity store didn't carry my size nursing bra (36F), but even so, their selection is limited. Being on the busty side while nursing, I had the best luck with underwires and the BEST bras from In fact, I am pretty sure you are the one who first told me about breakout when I was prego with John and your Sam was a baby. Anyway, as a currently nursing mom, I have to say that I MUCH prefer the selection online than in the store (and the web site tells you how to measure yourself) and the support of the underwire is much better than those medela bras. :)

Anyway, sorry to have to disagree with you on your blog. :) But I had to throw my two cents in.

Alli - breakout bras! I totally forgot about that - excellent website, yes, you are totally right about that. I did have one underwire nursing bra that I hated about two weeks into nursing, and I ended up throwing it away. I was measuring myself wrong too - my mil took me to the store and I got properly fitted and ended up finding the bra I lived in for a year.

Maybe the best advice is SHOP at the store, try on and find what you like, then BUY on-line. Anyone else want to tell us what worked for you?

Once again, great advice for new mommies!
I agree with the no-wire thing. I expanded about 6 sizes when nursing and tried an underwire (because I was used to it) and that's what the mall store sold me. Unfortunately this caused horrible mastitis (infections) from clogged milk ducts from the wires cutting into me. I went to a specialty store and paid a bit more, but it was totally worth the price and my health/sanity! The store fitted me and made sure the bra fit my lifestyle and my body. Not to say that underwires are evil (even though I think so! ha ha), but they may not be for someone who's breasts could use their own zip code! :)
